Things to do in Kochi (Fort Kochi)
- Fort Kochi heritage walk: fishing nets, St Francis Church and Santa Cruz Basilica · 2.5 h · free. Start at the Chinese fishing nets early, when fishermen haul them in; St Francis Church is where Vasco da Gama was first buried. Fishmongers by the nets will cook your pick at nearby stalls.
- Mattancherry Palace, Jew Town and the Paradesi Synagogue · 2.5 h · about ₹50 per person. The palace has some of Kerala's finest Ramayana murals (closed Fridays); the synagogue closes on Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays. Jew Town's spice warehouses and antique shops fill the lanes between.
- Kathakali performance with make-up session · 2 h · about ₹500 per person. Fort Kochi's cultural centres run a nightly shortened show with an explanation of the gestures; arrive an hour early to watch the elaborate make-up being applied.
- Kalaripayattu martial arts demonstration · 1 h · about ₹400 per person
- Kochi Water Metro ride and Marine Drive sunset · 2 h · about ₹60 per person. Electric boats link the High Court jetty in Ernakulam with Fort Kochi and the islands; cheap, air-conditioned and quicker than the road at rush hour.
- Kerala home cooking class · 3 h · about ₹2,000 per person. Fort Kochi homestays teach fish moilee, thoran and appam; most classes end with dinner.
- Kumbalangi or Cheriyakadavu village canoe trip · 3 h · about ₹1,200 per person. A short backwater taste near Kochi: Chinese nets, crab farms and coir-making in a model fishing village.
- Kochi-Muziris Biennale or Fort Kochi galleries · 2.5 h · about ₹200 per person. In Biennale years the festival runs roughly December to March at Aspinwall House and other warehouses; in between, Fort Kochi's galleries and street art fill the gap.
- Hill Palace Museum, Tripunithura · 2 h · about ₹50 per person. The former Cochin royal palace with crowns, palanquins and a deer park; closed on Mondays.
