Things to do in Pahalgam

• Aru valley · 3.5 h · about ₹1,500 per person. A 12 km union-taxi ride up the Lidder to open meadows and a small village; base for longer treks with a guide.
• Betaab valley · 2.5 h · about ₹1,200 per person. A riverside park in a green bowl named after the film shot here; combine it with Chandanwari in one union-taxi trip.
• Chandanwari snow point · 3 h · about ₹1,500 per person. A snow bridge often lasts into early summer. Reserved for pilgrims during the Amarnath Yatra; check access locally.
• Rafting on the Lidder · 2 h · about ₹1,200 per person. Mostly grade II–III stretches near Yannar from about May to August; operators provide helmets and jackets — insist on them.
• Pony ride into the hills · 3 h · about ₹1,500 per person. Ponies use fixed per-route rates set by the tourism department; ask for the card and agree waiting time and the exact route first.
• Lidder riverside walk and Mamleshwar temple · 2 h · free. Walk along the river from the town to the small stone Mamleshwar Shiva temple across the bridge.

Where to stay in Pahalgam

• Guesthouses in Pahalgam market and Laripora (budget, ₹1,800–₹4,000 a night): Walk to the bazaar and taxi stand.
• Riverside hotels on the Lidder and Aru road (mid, ₹4,500–₹10,000 a night): Rooms with the sound of the river and pine views.
• Luxury riverside resorts outside town (premium, ₹12,000–₹35,000 a night): Large grounds, fine dining and quiet river frontage.

Good to know

• During the Amarnath Yatra (roughly July–August) security convoys and pilgrim traffic fill the roads and Chandanwari is reserved for yatris.
• Some meadows and trails have been closed at times for security reasons; check locally which are open.
• Local taxi unions run all trips to Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari; outside taxis may not go beyond town.
